The Scriptures
Although the Scriptures are filled with light and truth, they themselves do not give salvation. For they are only a record of the Word of God, as Jesus Christ said, “Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.” [John 5:39]. In other words, it is not the record that grants eternal life but the Word, who is Christ the Lord [John 1:1-5, 14 and 1 John 1:1-2]. As Paul wrote, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth.” [Romans 1:16].

The Scriptures are a written testimony of the Father and the Son, as well as the power of the Holy Ghost. Through them we find a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path so that we might begin to see who God is and how we can approach His throne of grace. In particular, the Scriptures provide knowledge concerning Christ, His covenants, His Church, His doctrine, and the principles of His Kingdom, including both how to enter in [baptism of water and the Spirit] and how to live within it [Sermon on the Mount found in Matthew 5-7].

Truly a gross darkness would encompass the earth with the Holy Scriptures and the light contained therein. As Paul instructed Timothy, “But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.” [2 Timothy 3:14-17]. Thus we ought to “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” [2 Timothy 2:15].
